Nestled against the cliffs of the Siskiyou Wilderness’ highest peak, this deep lake is fringed with sweet-smelling mountain azalea blooms in July. A massive marble outcropping on one shore makes a dramatic base for fishing or chilly swimming.

Such a beautiful spot would be more crowded if the hike were easier. The first 5 miles of the route follow an ancient roadbed to the ruins of an old chrome mine. From there a rugged path scrambles 1.2 miles to the lake. Black bears are common, so remember to hang food 10 feet high at night. Permits are required only for campfires or camp stoves, and are available at the Gasquet Ranger Station 18 miles east of Crescent City.

The road ends at the old Cyclone Gap chrome mine with tailings piles, collapsed shacks, tunnel entrances, and ore cart rails. Keep left to continue . . .
