The starkly beautiful rimrock canyon of the lower Deschutes River is so remote that it's seen mostly by whitewater rafters and railroad engineers.  But hikers can see it too, following an abandoned railroad grade past canyons once spanned by trestles.  The trail starts at the end of an unusual 17-lfile riverside road from Sherars Falls, so the drive here is as spectacular as the hike.   . . .
