High on a quiet ridge above Detroit Lake’s powerboats and campgrounds, the old lookout site atop Dome Rock commands a view across jagged foothills to snowy Mt. Jefferson. Nearby, a steep trail dives into Tumble Lake’s hanging valley, amid rare Alaska cedars and the area’s best huckleberry fields. For a moderate hike to these enticing goals, start at an upper trailhead on a gravel backroad. For an easier drive but a much tougher hike, start at a lower trailhead on Highway 22, just a stone’s throw from Detroit Lake.
