Lookout Mountain

Moderate

7-mile loop

1220 feet elevation gain

Open June to late November

Use: hikers, horses, bicycles

From the wildflower-spangled sagebrush meadows of Lookout Mountain's plateau, views stretch beyond the forested Ochoco Mountains to a string of Cascade snowpeaks.  A loop trail not only visits the summit's old lookout site, but also a rustic shelter and an interesting abandoned mine.

From Prineville, drive . . .

. . . Just before your car, this path passes a derelict 3-story mine building and a collapsed shaft with ore cart rails.  Don't explore off the trail because the red cinnabar ore mined here was processed into poisonous mercury, and the mine may still be contaminated.
