When an army of settlers landed in Port Orford in 1851 to find a route inland to the new Rogue River gold mines, Captain William Tichenor assured them the task would be easy. They need only climb this imposing coastal peak to see the gold mine country on the far side, he claimed.  A scouting party labored through ancient forests to the summit and named the mountain Tichenor’s Humbug, because all they saw on the far side was more ocean.  Today, of course, the ocean vistas and ancient forests are precisely why this loop hike is so attractive.
