The charms of a desert river are many: bright blue skies, the pungent smell of sage, birdsong across glassy water, and the cool grass of an oasis-like riverbank. You’ll find it all on a loop hike from the state park at the mouth of the Deschutes River. Part of the loop follows the abandoned grade of the 1909 DesChutes Railroad, now a hiker/biker trail. The trip’s prettiest if it’s timed to see the wildflowers of spring or the colors of fall. Just avoid the heat of July and August.
