Groups to Hike With

If you enjoy the camaraderie of hiking with a group, contact one of the organizations that leads trips to the trails in this book.  None of the groups requires that you be a member to join scheduled hikes.  Hikers often carpool from a preset meeting place.  If you have no car, expect to chip in for mileage.

• Altair Ski & Sports Club (Eugene).  One to three hikes, downhill ski trips, or tours per week. Meetings at 7pm on the second Wednesday of each month at the Vets Club, 1626 Willamette St., Eugene. Check altairsports.org or call 541-485-4464.

• Bend Park & Recreation District (Bend). Vans transport hikers from the BPRD office (799 SW Columbia, Bend, OR 97701) to guided hikes with a variety of focuses: wildflowers, geology, history, women-only trips, snowshoeing, backpacking. • Central Oregon Nordic Club (Bend). Sunday hikes April-October from Bend, meetings at Bend’s Environmental Center. Call 541-382-8023 or https://conordicclub.wildapricot.org/.

• Chemeketans (Salem). Three to eight hikes a week. Cabin near Mt. Jefferson, meetings at 360½ State Street, Salem. Founded 1927. Write to P.O. Box 864, Salem, OR 97308 or check www.chemeketans.org.

• City of Eugene. One to three hikes or other outings a week, usually from River House, 301 N. Adams St., Eugene, OR 97402. Call 541-682-5329.

• Deschutes Land Trust (Bend/Sisters). Five to ten free hikes a week, led by knowledgeable volunteers. See http://www.deschuteslandtrust.org/hikes-events for current options. • Friends of the Umpqua (Roseburg). One hike every other Saturday, usually leaving from the Douglas County Courthouse parking lot behind the library at 8am. Dues $5 a year. Click https://www.friendsoftheumpqua.org.

• Trails Club of Oregon (Portland). Hikes usually on Wednesday, Saturday, and Sundays. Charming cabins at Mt. Hood and above Multnomah Falls in the Columbia Gorge. Founded 1915.  Meetings in Milwaukie. Check https://trailsclub.org.
