In one of the crookedest parts of the Crooked River’s cliff-rimmed canyon, an easy trail climbs a dry side gulch to a viewpoint beside the thumb-shaped knob of Chimney Rock. Although it’s open all year, this nearly shadeless hike can be too hot for comfort in July and August. After the hike, cross the road to a lovely riverside picnic area and campground, where a short path ambles along the glassy river’s cool, grassy bank.
