Hidden Lake

Deep in the Wallowas, this lake seems a hidden Eden. Snowy crags surround a high valley of wildflower meadows, subalpine firs, brooks, and tarns. From rocks beside the still green waters you can dive into the depths or sit and watch fish. The gate protecting this secret glen is distance: 8.2 miles of trail that bar all but backpackers, equestrians, and the most determined of day hikers.
If you venture here, remember that groups cannot be larger than 12. Campsites must be at least 100 feet from any lakeshore, tethered horses must be at least 200 feet from lakes, and campfires are strongly discouraged. Firewood cutting from standing trees or snags is prohibited, and downed wood is scarce.
